Tax Attorney in Oregon or Washington; Does Your...
Tax Evasion has been used to criminalize many, Nixon did use the IRS to attack political opponents and to discredit them. Well here is one politician who is attacking the LOCAL small businesses who supposedly are evading taxes? Are they? Or is the miss management of the city coming to light and the politicians are looking for a scapegoat? there is a clause we should be familiar with and that is Taxation without representation. I would like to point out that if a person has a small business which they do out of their homes and they offer their services, such as house cleaning, window cleaning, general fixer upper, scrap book consulting and supplies, Amway, then in fact those individuals which are...
Monterey - the soul of Steinbeck country
California, the State. San Francisco, the city. Monterey, the town. John Steinbeck, the author. For this Steinbeck fan, San Francisco is quite close to heaven. From San Francisco it is an easy drive down the peninsula to Santa Cruz and into Steinbeck territory.I fly into San Francisco airport late in the afternoon. The signs are immediate America. 'No Ped Xing', 'Squeeze right', 'Occupation by more than 132 persons unlawful'. From Rent-a-Wreck I collect a Chevrolet in two tones -- cat-sick green and vile yellow. A veritable pimpmobile. And was it not in a car like this I drove into San Francisco for the 1967 Summer of Love, to follow Timothy Leary's instructions to 'turn on, tune in, and drop out...
We have a serious problem brewing with GPS navigation systems for automobiles and even motorcycles. There are however problems with this devise as a high tech toy are more serious than you might think. Ask anyone in a metro area who has bought a new car with one of those cool GPS upgrades for their SUV or new sports car. We have had our customers complain (customers of the carwash business, which is my profession). Oh they love the gadget, but they are under whelmed by the lack of data and streets, which are not listed. You see we have been seeing incredible suburban growth in many cities. Places near large DMA metros are a problem out in the middle class suburbs. In many areas such as outside...
Justice in America - Looking out for the Lost
In a small, white collar suburban community just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah the ex- offender we spoke with (he asked us to keep his identity confidential) had been a model citizen, receiving promotion after promotion at work, avoiding all negative influences from his prior life, and even started his own foundation to assist in the rehabilitation of fellow Federal and State offenders. He was released from probation, had moved on in a world where he would finally be able to be productive and could use the skills and tools that he learned to assist the less fortunate. Life was good..His success hasn't come easily. The light haired 38-year-old is an ex-offender who had served in the Federal...
Dying to Vote in Mississippi, Part I
By 1965 concerted efforts to break the grip of state disfranchisement had been under way for some time, but had achieved only modest success overall and in some areas had achieved no success at all.The murder of voting-rights activists in Philadelphia, Mississippi, gained national attention, along with numerous other acts of violence and terrorism. Finally, the unprovoked attack on March 7, 1965, by state troopers on peaceful marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, on their way to Montgomery, persuaded the President and Congress to overcome Southern legislators' resistance to allowing the African American vote.President Johnson issued a call for a strong voting rights law and...
Motorcycle Laws in Different States
Different states in the US follow different motorcycle helmet laws that cater to their own residents and constituents. Motorcycle helmet law has been instituted to provide safety and protection to motorcycle riders from different states. But the helmet law being followed in one state may not be the same as those followed in another. There are even other states that do not have their own laws governing the proper use of motorcycle helmets. There are currently 4 states that do not have their own motorcycle helmet law. These are Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire. Of the other 46 states, 20 of them follow full helmet law for all riders in their territory to follow. They are Alabama, California...

Part Six of the Drought of US Droughts; June 2002
Historical and Recent Past Period Drought Data is very valuable to predicting future trends and cycles. By doing this we can prepare for crisis by building adequate water resources and monitoring our fresh water supplies. It is important to understand all the regional dynamics in order to make good non-linear decisions to insure our civilization has what it needs. This data is from 2002.If you think the US is having problems look at Mexico although they are getting some good and needed rain this week in the interior of the country, it has been quite a problem. This Hurricane season has been lighter than anytime in the last 100 years and is not delivering the rain it could. As the El Nino cuts of the...

How to Effectively Use Improvised Weapons
There are many items around each day that could be used as a self defense weapon. In this issue of our self defense newsletter I'm going to explain how to use five of the most common items which most people have access to.Before I start explaining how to use each of these improvised weapons, I want to emphasize a few important points.-Always keep your head up and look around so you'll be more alert.-If possible avoid people who seem suspicious and also avoid dangerous places.-Learn to recognize how to use any object as a weapon.-You must be sly when using these weapons so the attacker (bad guy) won't realize what you're doing.-All items should be held tightly in your hand down at your side so that...
As a son of a mother who was an alcoholic, I can tell you from firsthand experience the cause of alcoholism. Unlike food that satisfies a physical need, alcohol which provides no bodily nourishment satisfies a spiritual need.Alcohol is a mind-altering chemical and anesthetic that dulls the emotional pain of one's existence. The gnawing internal dissatisfaction with life is the primary reason for substance abuse. Young men who don't have the courage in and of themselves to approach a young lady think by drinking their inhibitions will lessen if not go away. Hence the dissatisfaction ultimately is with oneself and his or her life. Sadly many resort to substances before they work on themselves within...

This city is nestled in the foothills of Appalachian Mountains which sprawl along the single valley. And suburbs draw the map of the surrounding valleys. You will find the Red mountain in the center of the city. Charleston, SC is a place where Scarlett O'Hara would feel welcome as would any modern day persona. The city is warm, inviting, and above all else -- historic. When locals talk about South of Broad they are talking about the heart of the city. This area dates back several hundred years and features the row houses that made the city famous, the houses of worship that anchor the city [did you know that one of the first synagogues built in the US is in Charleston?], and the people who give the city its charm. The city is best observed on foot. Or, by horse drawn buggy. Make sure you have a comfortable pair of shoes on and, if visiting in the summer, expect to be soaked in sweat! Bring plenty of fresh...

Although Highland Park is a very old golf course compared to the very modern Poplar Creek, a recent restoration of the former by a leading architect has brought about more similarities to add to the already existing extraordinarily beautiful landscapes that the two have always enjoyed. Highland Park is no doubt the oldest golf course in the state of Alabama having been established in 1903. It actually opened as the Country Club of Birmingham. Still, in 1998 the course went through a vigorous restoration by well know architect Bob Cupp. The work of Mr Cupp had the desired effect of enhancing an already beautiful course that had stood the test of time. Highland Park still sparkles from that...

History of Mammoth Lakes
The history of Mammoth Lakes began 200,000 years ago, before the human populated the area. There were a lot of volcano bursts in the area of Mammoth Lakes. The last eruption took place 50 millennia ago.The Mammoth Lakes were not populated by white people at first. First were the Native American tribes - Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe tribes. Later in time in 19th century the white people started to populate the Mammoth Lakes with the California gold rush. A lot of saloons, hotels, houses were built in that time. The process of city growth slowed down when people found out, that the Mammoth Lakes were not really full of gold. The Mammoth Lakes tourist history began after the year 1890, where the first...

When former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore acted on principle and refused to adhere to a federal court order that he considered was both unlawful and improper, he never thought that his actions would lead to an overwhelming groundswell of support from across the country. His stance made headlines and brought international attention to this modern-day, David vs. Goliath showdown. Now, the same group of political and religious leaders that supported his actions then, are calling for Justice Moore to get back into the political arena and run for Governor of Alabama, where they believe his "no nonsense" approach and strong personal convictions will clean up a state known for its "good ole...

After Disaster: What Teens Can Do 04th April 2007 Author: Arthur Buchanan Note: Information based on brochure developed by Project Heartland -- A Project of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in response to the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Project Heartland was developed with funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in consultation with the Federal Center for Mental Health Services. • Whether or not you were directly affected by a disaster or violent event, it is normal to feel anxious about your own safety, to picture the event in your own mind, and to wonder how you would react in an emergency. • People react...
Fear of Being Outsourced? Fight Back
Me, outsourced? Impossible. How could they replace a business-humor columnist? But my brother-in-law, the radiologist, told me his hospital was threatening to cut his position because they had found a medical group out of India that would read MRIs at half the cost.He warned me, "Hesh, don't be so smug. No one is indispensable in today's world economy."He was right. I had become blasé. I needed to diversify and find readers outside the USA, especially in the booming call-centers of India.Do Indians find our business customs humorous? I decided to do some research. I called the IBM help desk. I asked the technician where he was located. He said "Birmingham, Alabama," and he said it with pride.I...

Comedian Chevy Chase, when he anchored the first Saturday Night Live faux-news desk, had a running joke that satirized, post-mortem, the endless medical updates provided by the public relations machine of a dying dictator ..."Here's a bulletin from Spain: Doctors are reporting that Generalissimo Francisco Franco is holding fast in his valiant fight to remain dead!"The point, of course, was that neither the Spanish public nor the global public at the time was ever fooled by the propaganda of Franco's terminal condition during his last days. The tweak also carried undertones that no government could overcome the forces of nature, no matter what it announced. That brings us to the wake of Hurricane...

Multi Million Dollar Estates In San Diego
Ask anyone what makes purchasing multi million dollar estates different from buying any other house, and invariably he or she will reply, "money." Greater sums raise the stakes and the stress level. Add to that a limited inventory of luxury homes in any one market, buyers and sellers with fewer incentives to compromise, intense competition for upscale property and multiple offers in hot markets. Clearly, high-end buyers need to know what they want, what features are important, and the fair market value of the homes in question.Who is Involved:The most notable difference between a transaction for a home that is less than $1 million and one that is above $10 million, other than the price, is the...
The Joys of Being Healthy
It is amazing to be able to say I am a whole, happy, healthy, loving woman. I was sick for the first 40 years of my life. Like millions of other human beings I grew up immersed in the family disease of alcoholism. For generations it has plagued my family. The unbalanced life I led is so common in our society; I didnt know anything was wrong. I was a participant in the chaos, confusion, neuroses, pain and suffering which is present in dysfunctional families. I call it The Dance of Death.I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri in the community of Clayton. The only memories I have of my father are when he would beat my brother and me with his belt so severely my clothes would cling to the bloody strap...

The historic downtown districts feature walking tours, antique shops, shopping, dining, or sightseeing.According to the City of Kissimmee's web site"local historians have offered many variations of the origin of the city's name. Most agree that Kissimmee is a modern spelling of a tribal word. The book Florida Indians and the Invasion from Europe by Jerald T. Milanich...

Therefore, you have to stand out from the crowd. You have to sparkle. How do you do this? Simple. It all starts with The Big Idea. The first secret you must learn in this funny business is that you dont actually have to write the whole article to get a job. In fact, only bright green novices attempt to write the whole thing before selling it. What you do need, however, is the IDEA for the great story. You will use this great idea to convince editors to pay you exorbitant amounts of money via a proposal letter...

I never cared all that much for Dick Morris who was a former advisor to President Clinton for twenty years. Morris, who advised Clinton for 20 years, is best known for managing Bill Clinton's successful 1996 bid for re-election, but his tenure on that campaign was cut short just before the election when it was revealed he was involved in a scandal of juicy proportions. Morris resigned under pressure (though there are different and interesting stories as to the reason), following which he turned his focus to media commentary. Upon reflection, I suspect being pressured to resign for sexual escapades by, of all people, Bill Clinton could engender some legitimate bitterness. Anyway, he now writes a...

Each year, Money magazine rates hundreds of American cities in order to help folks who may be yearning to move be able to find the best new place to settle. The magazine compiles statistics on various factors, such as housing affordability, job growth, commute time, schools, weather, access to health care, leisure pursuit possibilities, crime rate, and quality of life, and then publishes its findings once a year. For the year 2006, the overall winner was Fort Collins, Colorado, followed by Naperville, Illinois, and Sugar Land, Texas. Money magazine was especially impressed by the many parks in Fort Collins, including some sixty miles of biking and hiking trails in a town of 128,000 people located...
Well, I had my College Game of the Month going this weekend and was treated to three-plus hours of frustration, angst and general feelings of dread. I took Missouri laying just a couple of points at home against a ho-hum Oklahoma team. The Tigers proceeded to lay a fantastic egg, losing 26-10 in front of 60,000 disappointed fans. This game definitely doesn't count as a bad beat, but I still feel like I was on the right side on this one. Yes, I may be delusional. But I'm taking pills and whiskey for that. However, there were four separate sequences that doomed us. And if one of these had gone the other way things likely would've been different:1) Missouri's first drive, Chase Daniel hit Greg Bracey up...

West Phoenix Suburbs Explode With Growth
West Phoenix, AZ growing at an alarming rate. During our heated visit recently, we studied the economic vitality of Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield and Tolleson. This area is the fastest growing area of all of Phoenix which is the second fastest metro DMA area in the United States of America. Maricopa County is #2 next to Clark County in Las Vegas NV metro. Surprise, Glendale and Goodyear are breaking all kinds of records as the Governor looks at the issues of water and future resources. We of course do our homework on economic factors before we attempt to enter a region as most seasoned veteran business people do.In Avondale the population is growing and currently about 36,000 population. 33% of...
Some Economic Background on South Western CO
We were impressed with South Western Colorado as a good place to hang your hat and a pretty good place to run a business. Great labor supply, good transportation and excellent tourist flows. The town is growing in Cortez and up the hill in Durango as well. Their nearest trading partners Montrose and Farmington NM also helped with money flows to the area. We like the area and thought it was completely economically viable and an excellent choice especially for manufacturing.About the only drawback is the drug issue in the region, but that is with any US City really. It was not as bad there as we have seen in border cities, desert cities of big cities in other parts of the US. We talked with police and...
When you get off the bus in the Andean Mountain resort town of Banos, Ecuador, you'll see several people quickly moving towards you. Some of them will be the actual owners of the hotels in town, and others are working on commission. They'll all claim to have the nicest and the cheapest hotel. This onslaught of salesmen may annoy you at first, until you realize what it means. There are vacant rooms tonight, and there is real competition! They have tipped their hands, and you are in charge now. Let the contest begin! When my wife and I were in Banos recently, we let an older woman drag us off from the bus station. She showed us two hotels she owned, and we preferred the second. We were told the room...

New Jersey's Tax Exempt Property
BRIEF HISTORYGenerally, prior to 1900 New Jersey local tax assessors seldom entered a complete list of tax exempt property located within their municipality on their tax rolls. Why should they, nobody would ever think about levying a property tax on governmental, educational, church or other property used for charitable purposes. It made little sense to those early property tax assessors to spend the resources to find, list and value such tax exempt property. Why, taxing government and other tax exempt property owners that served fundamentally public rather than private interests would be just taking publics money from one pocket and putting it in the other pocket, right?Tax exemption cases...
