Just when you think we've finally reached a new level in our lives by owning a personal computer as we would a television set we now expect our local and county governments to also include themselves by using technology more in order to provide the services we expect from them to be much more easier. However, this is not the case. Here's why. I submitted a traffic citation to the Chicago traffic revenue department and had to wait for one month to get it to clear. I had placed calls to the department and most of them were on the re-dial button several times per day just to get through. Finally, when I did get through, I was either re-directed or told that it hasn't been 'pulled' yet. What does it...

The name Granada is ancient and mysterious. It may mean great castle, for the Roman fortress which once stood on the Albaicin Hill. When the Moors came here, the town was largely inhabited by Jews, for which they called it Granada of the Jews. The Jews are said to have been one of the first peoples to settle in Spain, even before the Romans. Many older homes in cities today have their roots in the Arts and Crafts movement. With their squared, low-lying layouts and sturdy construction, these homes are often easy to spot, but generally not as widely recognized or studied as Victorian homes from the same era - they simply remain unclassified or incorrectly identified as ranchers. As years progress, however, the homes, properly known as "Craftsman" buildings, are outlasting most Victorian buildings, and finding more recognition among preservationists and historic home buyers who want to ask for them by name. In some ways it's remarkable that Craftsman-style homes were so attractive, given the round-about way they were conceived. Rather than...

Planning is the key when taking on a home improvement project. Before you plan your second story addition it is important that you research what obstacles may need to be dealt with. For starters, before the project begins you must first get approval from your city planning or building department. Once the project begins, you should be prepared to move out of your home during the major stages of remodeling because they will interrupt every function in a home. These are just two examples of steps that need to be taken during the planning process. With regards to obtaining approval from your city, you should know that ordinances vary widely from city to city. In general, they all dictate how much...

Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanese poet who lived around the turn of the last century, once wrote, "You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." This has been on my mind much over the past year with natural disasters and human suffering on an unprecedented scale around the globe. I read not long ago a call for all good Christians to support higher taxes so government could do more to help the poor and needy. It disturbed me that someone would appeal to my religious beliefs to support increased government "charity." Is that really what charity is? While most religions teach that we have an obligation to care for one another, government...

School quality is one of the most important factors that parents consider when determining where to buy a home, condominium or townhouse. In the past, it was difficult to evaluate the quality of schools because no consistent evaluation standards existed between states, and sometimes between counties within a state. However, federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (passed in 2002) sought to remedy this situation. But even before 2002, some states anticipated the need for greater consistency and accountability within their schools. For example, in 1999, legislators in California passed the California Public Schools Accountability Act (PSAA). Among many other requirements, the PSAA established...

As the eastside has gotten cooler, the art scene has re-centered itself, allowing a distinct and legitimate encampment on Chinatown's Chungking Road. California wildfires again riveted the nation's attention during a roughly two-week period beginning in mid-October 2007. Overall responsibility for California's efforts to prevent and fight wildfires is in the hands of CAL FIRE, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
